How does rehab work? What are the steps?
Essentially, any rehab program is comprised of three major stages: detox, substance abuse therapy, and aftercare. Each of these stages has its own requirements and steps, like group therapy, individual therapy, etc. What they will depend on the center and the service setting.
What kinds of disorders can rehab treat?
The main reason behind most rehab check-ins is an addiction, and that can be related to any substance – illicit drugs, opiates, alcohol, and even prescription medicine. Some people might also go to rehab for mental health treatment only, especially those experiencing acute symptoms. In some cases, people suffering from both substance abuse and psychiatric disorders (dual diagnosis) need treatment – and they can get it in rehab as well.
Can I work and go to school while I’m in treatment?
Not all service settings allow for patients to continue working or studying from the facility. Inpatient/residential programs require that people stay inside the facility all day, until the end of the program. Only outpatient service setting programs, such as partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient (IOP) ones, give patients the option to go back home every day. Even then, some of these, like the PHP, might be too time-consuming for people to keep to their usual routines.
Can men and women receive treatment together?
There are both gender-specific and non-specific settings for treatment programs. Some people might actually feel more comfortable if there are only people of the same gender as them in the program. Men and women have different needs, challenges, triggers, and motivations, which is why these gender-specific options exist. If you feel like this might be more fitting for you, there are options in New Jersey, and we can direct you to them.
What am I not allowed to bring with me?
You should check in with the center of your choice about requirements and bans. Many rehabs might require that any medication be pre-approved before being brought in – prescription or not. Others might not allow patients to bring electronics with them that might give them internet access. Any and all restrictions are decided by the center itself, so it is important to contact them beforehand.
What is the smoking policy?
There is no national rule or policy on smoking while in rehab. Each center has its own rules, and some might even allow it. While there are some that completely ban it, many allow it on some level.
What options for programs do I have?
Usually, rehab programs fall under one of two categories: inpatient and outpatient. The first requires patients to check-in and not leave until the end of the program, providing 24/7 monitoring. In the latter, patients only need to go to the rehab center for treatment sessions and get to go home every day. The number of visits required varies depending on the patient’s needs. Some, like the partial hospitalization programs, is comprised of nearly daily visits. Others might only demand 3 visits or less.
How do I know which program to pick?
You won’t really pick it on your own. You should get an assessment with a licensed professional in order to know which program will be best for your case. Once you know which program is recommended for you, then you can do your research regarding location, prices, duration, etc. By then, you can contact us and we will help you find an affordable program that covers your needs.
What is the average length of stay?
The duration of the program depends on a number of factors. First, the service setting. Then, the level of addiction and symptoms displayed. And finally, the patient’s improvement and mindset. Inpatient rehab lasts a minimum of 28 days and can go up to 6 months or so. As for outpatient programs, they usually last anywhere between 3 months to up to even a year.
What’s my interaction going to be like with others during treatment?
Rehab centers often promote group activities along with group therapy sessions. These sessions are also an important part of rehab and recovery. They help work on empathy, insecurities, listening, sense of self and identity, generate insights and has many other uses. It is also an opportunity for patients to expand and build their social circles by including people that are going through the same and will have to adapt their lifestyles as well.
What types of activities will I be doing?
The activities are up to the center to decide. However, many have different goals and it is not hard to find one that might be fitting for you. Many provide holistic activities, such as yoga and meditation. Others might focus on fitness and exercise. There are even ones that organize wilderness connection activities. There is an option for everyone out there, and we at NJRehabs.org can help you find the one that has more to do with your lifestyle and goals.
Do all centers have religious affiliations or philosophies?
Not all clinics necessarily follow certain religious schools of thought or promote religion-focused treatment. While all clinics need philosophy to base their programs on, they are not always religious. However, it is not uncommon, and if you do want to find one that would fit into your beliefs, we can help. Those who do not lead a Christian lifestyle might have a harder time finding options that follow their doctrines, but we can definitely help!
Are visitors allowed?
When it comes to programs that require patients to check-in, they usually have, at least, visitation days. Rehab centers commonly provide family activities and counseling as well. In that case, the goal is to keep the family updated and instruct them regarding what to do to help. This also allows professionals to know the family and learn about family history, detect any negative behavior, etc. Understanding the family helps the team understand the patient and their experiences as well.
Insurance And Payments
Do rehabs accept insurance?
As all mental and behavioral services are considered essential benefits, rehab services are covered by insurance plans. The amount of coverage, however, will depend on the insurer and the patient’s plan. Additionally, a lot of clinics partner with insurers in order to provide discounts to patients who use those insurance plans. You can contact your insurer to check how rehab coverage works under your plan. We can also help you find a rehab center that accepts your insurance, so gather as much information about your plan as you can.
How much does treatment cost?
The total price of rehab will depend on a number of factors, such as service setting, duration, services required, what center you will go to, etc. Inpatient programs tend to be more expensive than outpatient ones, for instance. However, depending on how long it will go for, that can change. Some programs include detox, others don’t. If you have a limited budget or can only afford so much, we can help find a program you can afford.
How do I know if my insurance policy covers treatment?
The only way to be sure of what can be covered is by contacting your insurance provider. Plans and policies all vary, and each insurer provides different options.
What if I don’t have insurance?
There are other options regarding payment and making a rehab program more affordable. Medicare and Medicaid both provide rehab coverage, but they have certain specifications that must be followed. There is also state- and federal-funded programs that provide rehab financial aid for those who are eligible. Some rehabs also offer grants, sliding scales, and/or payment plans. We at NJRehabs.org can help you find which rehabs offer these options.
