Partial Hospitalization Program NJ

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in NJ

A partial hospitalization program is considered an outpatient treatment program. Unlike medical detox and inpatient rehabs, partial hospitalization programs do not require a full-time stay at our facility. Still, this program option can be almost as intense as inpatient rehab, and just as efficient.

Some people might be reluctant to the idea of PHP, and others might not have even heard of it before. Naturally, a few questions might come to mind when considering PHP as a treatment option:

  • What is the length of stay at a PHP?
  • Will my insurance cover a PHP program?
  • What kind of evidence-based therapy is provided in partial hospitalization?
  • Does the PHP program offer dual-diagnosis treatment?

These are just several questions that come to mind when considering PHP programs in NJ. If you are seeking help for yourself or a loved one, and think a PHP program is right for you, please speak with a PHP specialist today. All calls are confidential and free.

What Is Partial Hospitalization Program And How Does It Work?

As mentioned, patients in PHP will get to go home every day, and only need to come to the rehab center of their choice for treatment sessions. However, among the outpatient service setting options, PHP is the most intense one. PHP programs in NJ typically have clients come in 6 hours or so a day, 5 days a week. Some sessions might be even a bit longer than that.

Usually, PHP is recommended for people who do not need 24/7 monitoring, but still need intense surveillance and help. While it is an intense program, however, it cannot replace the services of an inpatient program if one is required. And that is especially the case during the detox stage. Due to the high risk of withdrawal symptoms becoming too severe, PHP cannot take place before that stage is over.

That is why PHP is more adequate to people who only have mild to moderate symptoms of withdrawal. If that is not the case, patients are advised to first go through medical detox before enrolling in the PHP.

In order for PHP to be truly effective, there are a few “requirements” regarding the patient’s lifestyle. First, they need to have a stable living environment. Their home, workplace, and general routine need to be as free from triggers and windows of opportunities for relapse as possible. Secondly, they need to have a good support system. Their friends, family, co-workers, and as many people as possible need to respect their limitations and be supportive.

PHP is also used as a “transition” for people who have finished detox or even an inpatient program. Because it requires frequent visits every week, it is the safest choice for recovering addicts as they try to adapt to their daily routines.

People suffering from dual diagnosis can still rely on PHP to get the help they need. Those who struggle with mental and substance abuse disorders need to treat each separately, and PHP is an option for them. Once any acute or severe symptoms of either disorder has been treated, they can start PHP and address the disorders they suffer from.

What To Expect From Partial Hospitalization Program

The PHP will integrate both the psychiatric and medical services needed for proper recovery. Before starting, patients will have to go through an assessment so the team can better understand the patient’s scenario. Once that is done, they will establish if any medication might be needed, the sessions they will go through, etc.

After detoxing, patients must address all the issues caused by addiction, and that includes psychological effects. Therefore, PHP includes therapy and counseling as well so that patients can overcome addiction.

More often than not, behavioral therapy is applied in the PHP, and different methods at once may be used. Behavioral techniques address negative thought patterns that might trigger harmful behavior, such as substance abuse. They can also help patients learn about healthy coping skills and mechanisms in order to better process their feelings.

Individual counseling in PHP is also a great tool to ensure the root of the problem is being treated. It is an in-depth session into issues related to substance abuse. Additionally, patients and health professionals can discuss and set realistic goals. This is vital for the patient to have a sense of purpose and direction, which in turn, keeps them from craving and falling into substance abuse again.

Many centers also integrate relapse prevention into their PHP. This is extremely important to recovering addicts since the first year after treatment can be the hardest. Around half of people tend to relapse after getting clean, so learning healthy mechanisms to avoid it is a differential.

Group activities also play an important role during PHP. They help put the patient in a group context and lets professionals analyze them in that environment. Through group sessions, whether therapy or support group meetings, a patient will get to learn from their peers and help them as well. Human bonding makes the patient feel understood and less alone, which is important to avoid depression. It also gives them the opportunity to rebuild their social circles.

Any other extra activities will depend on the rehab center chosen. Many centers will take advantage of holistic treatments, such as yoga or meditation, to help their patients. Others will also provide nutrition plans to help them improve their health. Art therapy, or music therapy, are other alternative activities that patients can benefit from. These are ways to integrate more parts of patient’s lives into the healing process and make them explore and learn about themselves.

Intensive Outpatient Program x Partial Hospitalization Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is also an outpatient service setting option, but it is a bit different from PHP. While also allowing patients to go back home every day, the sessions for IOP are less intense and less frequent. They might require three or even fewer visits a week, and the sessions could be as short as 3 hours.

However, IOP and PHP are not interchangeable. IOP is recommended to milder scenarios than PHP, and require even more independence for their patients. Meaning those who need more intense surveillance might risk relapsing if they go for IOP instead. Some might be tempted to do so because IOP might be cheaper, but make no mistake: doing so might affect the efficiency of recovery.

What Happens Once A Partial Hospitalization Program Is Completed?

Overcoming addiction is a process, and the battle against it does not end when the PHP does. The aftercare stage of treatment is just as important as all the ones that come before it. After the patient concludes the PHP, they still need to make some changes in their lifestyle and get help.

Patients are advised to continue attending meetings and support groups available to them. It is vital that they have new sober friends in their social circles as well. These groups are a way for recovering addicts to help each other avoid relapse. Narcotics Anonymous, 12-step meetings, all of those can be helpful and efficient for recovering addicts.

Some patients might choose to go into sober living once the finish PHP. It is an option that is becoming more and more popular, and that can be very beneficial. Recovering addicts need a safe place and living environment once they get clean, and sober living provides just that.

People leaving PHP should also look into getting individual therapy for themselves. Those who suffer from dual diagnosis might even need a psychiatrist. Taking medication for a psychiatric disorder is important, but it can be tricky for people who have misused medication in the past. That is why dual diagnosis patients must have psychiatric follow-up and help after PHP.
